Getting the most AdSense revenue from online forums
By Cody Moya
Many people who host online forums complain that those forums are difficult and expensive to administer and that they provide very little in the form of revenue or reimbursement for all that hard work.
While that is certainly true in many cases, in fact there is a great deal of money to be made through online forums and other nontraditional types of internet media. The key is to understand how these forums are used, and to position your ads to make the most of users' natural tendencies.
For instance, there are a great many online forums that focus on helping shoppers find the lowest price and the best deal. These types of forums are a natural venue for Google AdSense ads. After all, the participants in these forums are already ready to buy and looking for a good deal. Those web publishers who are able to provide them with real value can enjoy enormous success through the use of forums and forum postings.
When placing ads in online forums it is important that the ads do not stick out from the rest of the text. The text ads should instead blend in with the rest of the postings and appear as an integral part of the online forum itself.
The key is to make the ad look like just another part of the content. It is important to get the attention of the visitor, and to keep that attention through the useful content. Then, once you have captured the attention of the visitor, the sales pitch can do the rest.
One way to encourage readers of online forums to read and click on your Google ads is to place the ads at the bottom of each post. If, however, other forum users begin to spot this trend, your click through percentage could start to drop. That is just another reason why it is so important to consistently check Google click through statistics.
If you do notice a drop off in click through ratios, it may be a good idea to back off a bit and place an ad on every second or third post instead of on every one. This will produce more interest on the part of forum visitors while avoiding burnout.
Some people will try to force viewers to look at the ads by placing the ads in the middle of a post, but this is generally not a winning strategy. Breaking up the reading experience with the intrusion of an unwanted ad is the last thing you want. The goal should be to make the ad an integral part of the posting, not to make it stick out as an ad. It is best to position the ad where it will be noticed but will not interfere with the viewing of the posting itself.
It is also important to not lump a lot of ads together in the middle of the page. While this strategy can be a good one with passive web viewers, it will not work so well with users of online forums, who will simply drop their eyes and read around the ads.
Last but certainly not least it is important to ad a Google search box to the online forums you host. Visitors to online forums in particular are often so intrigued by something they read in a posting that they want to check it out for themselves. Giving the forum users an easy way to do a Google search will give them the information they need while providing you with an additional source of revenue.
Every time a user clicks on an ad generated by a Google search, you will be entitled to a cut of the profits, and that can provide even more revenue from what you thought were money losing internet forums.
